What We Can Do For You
A veteran or surviving spouse of a veteran with a service-connected disability rating 50% or more as determined by the US Department of Veterans Affairs can apply to qualify for a Veteran Exemption on your primary home in which you claim homestead exemption. You must have a signed application on file with our office for it to apply and provide the necessary Department of Veterans Affairs paperwork as this is not automatically granted upon purchase. One special note, the surviving spouse of a veteran must occupy and remain the owner of the primary home for it to apply. The veteran benefit does not apply to a surviving spouse of a veteran purchasing a new primary home after the death of the veteran. (See La. Const. Art. 7 §21)
Also ask about the Special Assessment Level Freeze as you may also qualify.
If you need assistance calculating your veteran exemption benefit, please call our office at 225-647-8182.
Effective January 1, 2023, 73% of the voters in the State of Louisiana voted to approve Constitutional Amendment No. 2 (Acts 2022, No. 172), which replaced and expanded the veteran property tax exemption into three categories.
50-69% Disabled Veteran Exemption: In addition to the homestead exemption authorized in La. Const. Art. 7 §20, the next 2,500 of assessed value of property receiving the homestead exemption owned and occupied by a disabled veteran with a disability rating of 50% to 69% shall be exempt from ad valorem taxation. For example, 7,500 homestead exemption + 2,500 veteran exemption = 10,000 total assessed value exemption.
70-99% Disabled Veteran Exemption: In addition to homestead exemption authorized in La. Const. Art. 7 §20, the next 4,500 of assessed value of property receiving the homestead exemption owned and occupied by a disabled veteran with a disability rating of 70% to 99% shall be exempt from ad valorem taxation. For example, 7,500 homestead exemption + 4,500 veteran exemption = 12,000 total assessed value exemption.
100% Disabled Veteran Exemption: In addition to homestead exemption authorized in La. Const. Art. 7 §20, the remaining assessed value of property receiving the homestead exemption owned and occupied by a disabled veteran with a disability rating of 100% shall be exempt from ad valorem taxation. For example, 7,500 homestead exemption + remaining assessed value veteran exemption = total assessed value exemption.
